ABOUT BAG THE BAG
The mission of Bag the Bag is to reduce plastic waste and advance the mindful use of commodities in Athens-Clarke County and on the UGA Campus.
Bag the Bag strives to raise awareness about the ecological and economic dangers of single-use plastic items while promoting sustainable alternatives. Our current focus is on the single-use plastic bag.
We believe that we should all be seeking innovative change to our world's greatest problems. Through the approaches of education, advocacy, outreach, and recycling, we aim to create a community-wide dialogue on consumption and waste reduction.
We look forward to working with every member of the Athens-Clarke County and University of Georgia communities to make our home a more sustainable place!
The Bag-Snaggers install, maintain, and collect plastic bag recycling bins around capus and find new locations to install bins. We work with the UGA Residence Hall Association and currently manage 10 bins and have diverted 1500 bags from the landfill.
Education & Service
Members engage with our local community to teach about waste reduction. We frequently attend local elementary and middle schools and use hands-on activities (such as turning old t-shirts into tote bags) to educate our community on the importance of sustainable practices.
Members try to create lasting impact through county-wide legislation. We host canvassing events to collect signatures and work with local businesses to gather support. We believe a small fee (five cents) on single-use plastic bags can create the most positive impact.
The outreach subcommittee works with local businesses to encourage sustainable practices. They creates flyers, advertisements, and documentaries while working to ensure a more vibrant sustainable community.
